About our board members:
Jim Holdaway has served on the Auckland Regional Planning Authority where he promoted a network of regional parks for the Auckland region, and was both a founding and long-serving member of the Auckland Regional Authority. A trustee for Motutapu Restoration Trust and Hauturu Supporters Trust, he was also a member of Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board for 19 years. Jim was a founding member of The Tree Council and is its honorary president.
Hueline Massey joined The Tree Council very soon after it was set up, 20 years ago and since joining the Board in 2001 has held the roles of Secretary, Treasurer and Field Officer. Hueline has completed the Community Tree Care Short Course run by The Tree Council and is a member of the Community Tree Adviser network.
Sigrid Shayer has been a Board member since 2003 and has been actively involved in tree issues for over 20 years. Her interests revolve around housing, trees, environmental sustainability, social justice and the built environment. She is currently Chair of The Tree Council.
Sherylle Scott BLA joined The Tree Council after completing the Community Tree Care Course in 2006. Sherylle has been able to relieve Hueline of the rolls of Treasurer and Membership Secretary and is also a Community Tree Advisor for The Tree Council. She holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Unitec and has had her own landscape design business since 1992.
Lesley Haines was elected to The Tree Council Board in 2010. Leslie has been involved with the original development of the Community Tree Care Course and has been teaching the component on Native Trees in Auckland since its inception. Leslie's focus is the Auckland Urban Forest as a comprehensive concept incorporating all trees native and exotic, naturally growing and planted, on public and private land.
Pip Mules joined The Tree Council in 2009. In 2010 she became a member of the Tree Council board because she was so concerned about the fate of Auckland’s trees as a result of the imminent changes in the Resource Management Act. She is a lecturer in the School of Communication Studies at AUT. She is working to develop a Facebook presence for The Tree Council. She is an amateur tree lover who is committed to improving her knowledge of trees, particularly native trees, and preserving Auckland’s urban forest.
Andre le Claire joined The Tree Council Board at the AGM in 2010. Andre works as a municipal arborist for Auckland Council and has many years vocational experience in the fields of horticulture and arboriculture. Andre presents arboricultural expertise to The Tree Council and has enthusiasm for horticulture particularly trees within urban landscapes.
Dr Mels Barton emigrated to NZ in 1999 Mels ran her own environmental consultancy for a number of years with her husband. Mels was a member of the Waitakere Ranges Protection Society executive for many years until 2011. Since 2010, she has been the Auckland co-ordinator for the week long annual event ‘Seaweek’. She is also a trustee for the Weedfree and EcoMatters Environmental Trusts.
Mels was co-opted onto the Board of The Tree Council during winter 2011, and elected at the 2011 AGM.
