Auckland City Council's response to new urban tree protection legislation
28 November 2009
Report to City Development Committee 12th November 2009
Agreed resolution/minutes
Clarification has been sought from the Council on a couple of items in these minutes:
- The Central Area (CBD and some of the adjoining area) does not have general tree protection rules, and nothing changes there (wording in minutes is very ambiguous and confusing)
- There will still be continued protection for trees on private land in the cliffline amenity zone after January 2012. Following quote from Council:
"The cliffline amenity zone covers all areas within 20m of the cliffline (around St Mary's Bay area) or 30m from the high tide mark (for the other sites along Tamaki Drive, Glendowie, Parnell, Hillsborough etc. coastlines) irrespective of whether the land is public or private. Within this zone:
i) No person shall cut, damage, alter, injure, destroy or partially destroy:
(a) any indigenous tree or vegetation;
(b) any exotic tree greater than 6m in height or 600mm in girth (measured at 500mm above ground level).
Removing trees in these zones to improve/ protect the view is specifically prohibited."
